I also find that the media has some what alienated themselves. Ive had numerous occasions where the mdia has contacted me, used my material and never cited me as the source.

Using the media as a marketing tool is changing as As Donna Maria says how and where you package yourself is critical to your future visibility and social networking is one of the most successful and easy to use assets.

In my experience helping people use new media tools to be their own media outlets, the biggest problem I see is that their business is not focused enough. They may have tons of Twitter followers and lots of great information and products to share. They may even know how to use social media from a technical standpoint. But knowing how to use it and knowing how to use it to accomplish certain specific goals are two different things.

Before using social media extensively, know exactly who your target customer is and exactly what your niche is. If you do, you'll be able to use social media effectively and not waste time.

If you have any questions, feel free to post.

Thanks!

Can't wait to learn about using video to promote yourself and services. After watching indieshopping.tv I realized I need the value of your expertise.

Jim,

Good question, and thanks for asking it. I think the role of mainstream media is to change with the times and realize that everyone is the media. Because of the Internet, you and I can do just about everything we need to do to reach our target market and we can do it using the same tools that are available to mainstream media outlets. But I think the difference is that we can do it more effectively. We are nimble and frugal by necessity and we know how to make a program do whatever we want it to do.

I think there is room for all media outlets, including everyone here at this group, to grow and thrive. If we continue to behave like the media outlets we are for our various causes, passions and businesses, mainstream media will eventually begin to copy our techniques.

That's what recognizing that the media is you is all about. We can do anything! Radio shows, TV shows, podcasts, magazines, blogs, websites, email newsletters, social groups like this one, teleseminars, e-books, blog books, Twitter, Facebook. All of those are our media outlets and the possibilities are endless because technology is.

You and others here have been at this a lot longer than me so I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences too.

I'm excited to be here at your group and look forward to everyone else's thoughts.

Donna,
With all the craze about new media, what is the primary role of mainstream media today?
Thanx.
